There’s a bit of story behind this photo. The boy in the picture was extremely shy at the beginning of our session and wasn’t opening up all that much. After a bit, I asked him what he wanted to do. He thought about it for a moment, and all of a sudden his face lit up and he asked if we could go in the basement. Once down in the rec room, he began showing me all his stuff, including the new air hockey table. I had mom move into the scene, and captured the moment.

It can’t really be stressed enough; the photos that become lasting, memorable keepsakes are the ones where I am able to capture someone’s true inner self, and to do it the person has to be relaxed, at ease, and comfortable. The camera and all the gear can be intimidating for kids at first, but when you ask a kid about their toys, they usually light right up. Come to think of it, asking parents about their favorite toys can often have the same effect.
