Here's Rob grinding off a bolt that connected the old post to the floor.
Here’s the entire back-of-the-napkin nutshell plan, vastly oversimplified to protect the sanity of those involved:
• One gray wall, all the rest white
• A white ceiling
• A really nice floor
• Some nice lights.
We want clients to come in and be totally comfortable in the space and not give it a second thought other than, “Wow, this is really nice.”
After a million trips to both Goodwill and the dump, we got started. Here’s an annotated gallery of the progress we’ve made to date.
This is the “before” view from the entry door.
Here’s the view from the back corner. To the left is the big wall that we’ll paint gray. We’re planning on cutting a hole in the side of the house to the right and installing french doors for natural light.
Here’s the view from the opposite corner from the entry door. So nice and clean.
Here’s another view of the completely cleaned out studio.
Art! Get out of bed! Rob is here!
Rob installing drywall on “The Big Wall,” which we later renamed, “The Easy Wall.”
We removed the poorly-hung drywall from this wall, only to discover that the studs were all warped and not plumb. This became known as “The Hard Wall.”
Here’s the custom modified metal studs that we used to fix “The Hard Wall.”

Finally properly re-hanging drywall on “The Hard Wall.”
Studio not done? No worries, set it up and keep shooting!
Never mind the construction materials, keep shooting!
Originally the garage tracks were attached directly to the big wall. We modified them and attached them to the ceiling.
The old, gnarly cracked post in the middle of the garage.
Still gnarly and cracked after all these years.
All jacked up and ready to go!
I’m in full This Old House Mode, which is like Beast Mode but in the comfort of my own home.

Here’s La writing a love note on the new support post.
The new support post in all it’s supportive glory. Still hasn’t fallen down!
I pulled out the old powder room door and began ripping up the old tile.
Here’s the new powder room door. This one opens to the left.
Wiring up the lights.
I had to repurpose some old cabling into pigtails.
New lights!
We finally settled on a brand for the floor, went with Karndean. It’s super heavy duty, durable, and often used in commercial spaces.
Tomorrow, Lara and I are off to Imaging USA 2018 in Nashville, TN. As soon as we get back we’ll be right back to work on the studio remodel. Stay tuned for more pics!
