Family Portrait In The Grass At The Beach
Family portrait in the grass at the beach, taken at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline, WA. In this photo we see a family of four including a mom, dad, a daughter and a son, sitting on a low and very old gray driftwood log in the green grass on top of a sand dune on the shore of the Puget Sound. They are laughing more than grinning, and it looks like they are having more fun than just posing for photos. We can see a tattoo on the mom’s right arm and dad is sporting an excellent spiked mohawk-style haircut and goatee.
This photo was shot as part of a series of photos that we produced for an annual fundraising event that we ran to benefit the Cascade K-8 Community School in Shoreline, WA. We scheduled a day-long series of back to back mini sessions on the beach, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the school. These sessions were popular enough that the mini session fundraiser became a recurring, annual event.
Typically for these events, we’d block out about three hours for the event and then we’d book ten to twelve fifteen-minute back to back sessions. We’d have someone meet and check in each of the family groups as they arrived at the beach and then we’d walk down a predetermined path through the dunes and brush and then back up the beach and shore, stopping to take photos in an assortment of locations along the way.
We would usually schedule the fundraiser for the early fall so that the participants could have time to order gift prints or holiday cards. We would go ahead with the event no matter the weather, rain or shine, which both made for great indirect lighting on cloudy days and fun and interesting portraits when it was windy or rainy.
